US politician and husband killed in 'targeted' attacks on two Democrats

A man posing as a law enforcement officer shot and killed a U.S. state politician and her husband in a brazen attack outside their home, the state's governor said.

Another government official and his wife were wounded in attacks in the Brooklyn Park and Champlin neighborhoods of Minnesota on Saturday.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the attack as “targeted political violence.”

Police were searching for the gunman responsible for the attacks on Democratic lawmakers.

Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said recordings found in a fake police car recovered at the scene of one of the incidents named several lawmakers and other officials.

Two sources familiar with the situation identified the wanted suspect as 57-year-old Vance Bolter.

They could not discuss details of the ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Melissa Hortman, former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband were killed early Saturday morning in their Brooklyn Park home.

A second government employee, Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife were shot multiple times in Champlin.

Officials say the suspect's notes mentioned both Ms. Hortman and Mr. Hoffman.

“When we searched the vehicle, we found a manifesto with the names of many legislators and other officials,” Mr. Bruley said.
