Ukrainians' favorite vegetable has increased in price by 50% in a week: where did this jump come from and what to expect next

Following greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine, prices for tomatoes, which accompany them in traditional salads, are gradually increasing. Moreover, during the week, wholesale prices for the latter increased by 50%, and this is clearly not the limit.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

This is reported by the EastFruit project, according to which greenhouse tomatoes are sold in the range of 50−60 UAH/kg ($ 1.20−1.57/kg), which is on average 51% more expensive than in early October. However, the wholesale price is still 20% lower than in October 2024.

Analysts attribute this price increase to the cool weather that has recently set in Ukraine and the consistently high demand for tomatoes. As a result, the market has experienced a situation of a drop in the supply of the vegetable due to a decrease in yield due to the weather, with a high number of people wanting to buy the product. The result was a sharp increase in prices for wholesale batches of tomatoes available on the market.

At the same time, experts emphasize that most small producers have practically completed sales and offer tomatoes only in small wholesale, while the quality of such products is mostly low. At the same time, harvests in stationary greenhouses have also become small-scale, so the combines also release vegetables in small batches.

As a result, experts believe that an inevitable increase in tomato prices in the future is inevitable, since high demand will persist, but supply will not increase significantly.

Currently, according to the Ministry of Finance portal, retail prices for tomatoes in Ukraine are:

  • red — 70.3 UAH (in September 76.3 UAH);
  • pink — 77.5 UAH (74.7 UAH);
  • cream — 90.5 UAH (80 UAH).

Note that the price increase does not only apply to vegetables, the cost of more expensive food products is also increasing. For example, pork.
