Money at risk: pensioners may have their cards blocked and payments cut off

In Ukraine, there is a problem with the so-called “drops” – citizens who “drive away” money from fraudsters through their bank cards in order to legalize funds obtained illegally. And they receive a certain reward for this. Although the NBU has introduced certain restrictions on transfers, the problem has not been solved. Experts do not exclude that this year up to 20 percent of new cardholders may be participants in such schemes.

It is possible that a corresponding register will be created for such people, as stated by the head of the Finance Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Danylo Hetmantsev.

“The National Bank has appealed to our Committee to amend the legislation on the creation of a register of “drops”. The bill will be submitted to parliament in the near future,” he said on his TG channel, adding that anyone who trusts their financial cards to fraudsters should be aware of the risks they are taking.

Among the reasons for combating such schemes, he specifically mentioned their use for drug trafficking and terrorist financing.

“Getting into the drop register, limiting the possibility of making financial transactions – all this is not worth the money that scammers offer you,” said Getmantsev and added: “Give me your bank card, and I will pay you a thousand hryvnias” – when someone approaches you and offers such a “profitable offer”, you should understand that this is definitely not about legitimate transactions.”

And in an interview with “Novyny.LIVE” he specified that all citizens, including pensioners, are at risk. The cards of people who fall into the “drop” register will be functionally limited, probably only the most necessary transactions will be possible with them, and most financial services and lending will become unavailable.
