Numerous personnel at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration were let go amid the series of layoffs triggered by the government closure last week, several informants disclosed to ABC News.
Widely recognized for its management of the launch of the 988 suicide prevention hotline, SAMHSA collaborates with state and local authorities on mental health and addiction programs, and allocates billions in grant money.
The dismissals, which commenced on Friday, encompass extensive job cuts affecting employees overseeing mental health services for children, adolescents, and families, sources revealed to ABC News.

About a tenth of SAMHSA’s 900-person workforce were terminated during the Department of Government Efficiency reductions in the spring. Additional personnel were recently shifted to different initiatives within the Department of Health and Human Services, which has oversight over SAMHSA.
A HHS representative communicated to ABC News that workers who were issued a Reduction in Force notice "were considered non-essential by their respective department."
Although the repercussions of these latest terminations are still being evaluated, an insider informed ABC that the agency was "severely impacted."
