A judge ruled Thursday that a man who police say crashed his car into Jennifer Aniston's front gate must undergo a mental health evaluation to determine whether he is fit to face stalking and vandalism charges.
Jimmy Wayne Carwile, 48, appeared in court shirtless and wrapped in a blanket behind glass in a holding area of a Los Angeles courtroom. The Mississippi man did not speak or enter a plea.
Prosecutors allege he stalked actress Aniston for two years through numerous voicemails, emails and social media messages before crashing into her gate on Monday.
Judge Keith L. Schwartz expressed doubt that Carwile would understand what was happening when the prosecutor asked for a restraining order to keep the defendant away from Aniston, who will remain in custody.
Carwile's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Toral Malik, said: “At this point, I don't think his separation from Ms. Aniston is an issue.”
However, Judge Schwartz decided to issue a ruling at the request of the prosecutor's office.
“You are not to have any contact with Jennifer Aniston under any circumstances,” the judge said.
Aniston was at home when Carwile crashed his Chrysler PT Cruiser into the gate of her upscale Bel Air property, causing extensive damage, prosecutors said. A security guard stopped him in the driveway until police arrived and arrested him.
There were no reports of casualties.
Aniston's attorney, who attended Thursday's hearing, declined to comment, and other representatives for the “Friends” star did not respond to requests for comment on the situation.
Carwile also faces an aggravated charge of threatening to cause serious bodily harm. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.
Ms. Malik does not speak to the press outside the court.
Aniston purchased the mid-century home on 3.4 acres in 2012 for around $21 million (£15.8 million), according to Architectural Digest.
She became one of television's biggest stars, rising to fame during her 10-year run on NBC's Friends. Aniston won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and was nominated for nine more. She currently stars in The Morning Show on Apple TV+.
