Investigators are looking into the cause of the arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence over the weekend, the latest incident of political violence in the United States.
They began looking into Cody Bulmer's background after officials said he jumped a metal fence, evaded police and set fire to the Pennsylvania governor's home.
Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, was denied bail Monday after being charged with attempted murder, terrorism and arson.
He pleaded not guilty to the crimes he was accused of.
He told police he intended to hit Shapiro with a sledgehammer if he encountered him after breaking into the building, according to court documents.
The reasons for his attack, including possible political or religious motives, remain unclear.
Bulmer's mother said she had been seeking help for his mental health in recent days, but “no one wanted to help her.”
Christy Bulmer said her son is not taking medication.
However, in court, Balmer politely told the judge that he did not suffer from mental illness.
The fire caused extensive damage and forced Shapiro, his family and guests, including other relatives, to evacuate the building early Sunday morning.
Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the 1968-built home had no sprinkler system and damage could run into the millions of dollars.
Governor Shapiro said he, his wife, four children, two dogs and other family celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover in one room Saturday night with members of the Harrisburg Jewish community.
At about 2 a.m. on Sunday, they were awakened by a knock on the door from patrol officers.
They were able to take shelter and firefighters extinguished the flames, officials said.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Ballmer walked about an hour from his home to the governor's residence and, when questioned by police, “admitted to his hatred of Governor Shapiro,” according to an affidavit not mentioned in other reports.
He then returned home, where police say the clothes he was wearing at the time of the crime and a small sledgehammer were later found.
