In the period from January to September 2025, Ukrainian insurance organizations resolved 11,246 occurrences of vehicle collisions triggered by Ukrainian motorists in foreign nations. Overall, more than 38 million euros were disbursed as insurance payouts under the international Green Card system.
Delo.ua informs about this, citing information from the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTSBU).
The MTIBU highlights that the average payment size is contingent on the liability thresholds set in the country where the incident took place. However, the data presented indicates that each insured case costs insurers upwards of 1,000 euros, with some instances exceeding even 100,000 euros.
Why is a “Green Card” necessary?
The “Green Card” represents a global insurance document safeguarding the driver against monetary repercussions stemming from a traffic mishap for which they are accountable, while also assuring reimbursement for damages incurred by third parties across 47 countries spanning Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Insurance providers stress that vehicle operators should not overlook acquiring this policy, as, sans it, they would be compelled to independently cover all expenses related to compensating damages in the event of a crash. The total of such outlays can potentially dwarf the certificate’s expense by tenfold or even a hundredfold.
Possessing a “Green Card” constitutes an essential precondition for overseas travel in one’s own automobile—border crossings are prohibited without it.
For reference, from January to July 2025, allocations to road accident casualties under “autocivilka” policies surpassed UAH 3.4 billion (mandatory civil liability insurance for terrestrial vehicle proprietors). This signifies a 26.4% uptick contrasted with the equivalent timeframe last year.
