The channel reported that an Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed five people, including a prominent Al Jazeera reporter.
Late on Sunday, there were reports of heavy bombing in Gaza, and shortly before midnight local time, Al Jazeera reported that correspondent Anas al-Sharif had been killed in a strike.
Rami Mohanna, an administrator at the nearby Shifa hospital, said the strike hit an Al Jazeera journalists' tent outside the hospital.
Along with al-Sharif, three other journalists and their driver were killed.
The Israeli military confirmed the report, saying Mr al-Sharif “claimed to be a journalist” and that he had links to Hamas.
Mr al-Sharif has denied any allegations of political allegiance. The Committee to Protect Journalists last month expressed grave concern for his safety and said he was “the victim of a smear campaign by the Israeli military.”
Al Jazeera said in a statement that the attack was a “targeted assassination.”
It notes: “Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns the deliberate killing of its correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Kraiki, and photographers Ibrahim al-Taher and Mohamed Nofal by Israeli occupation forces, which is yet another blatant and targeted attack on press freedom.”
