The PGA Tour season reaches its climax this month with the FedExCup Playoffs. But how do they work and who's in contention for the overall top spot? We take a closer look at the participants, the format and everything you need to know…
What are the FedExCup Playoffs?
FedExCups are tournaments that run throughout the season where players earn points based on their performance on the PGA Tour. Additional points are awarded at majors, The Players, and PGA Tour “Signature Events.”
The playoffs began in 2007 and have seen many changes in qualification and format since then. This year, they included three limited-entry tournaments.

What tournaments are included and who participates in them?
Only the top 70 players at the end of the season qualified for the FedEx St Jude Championship, which was won by Justin Rose in a playoff against US Open champion JJ Spawn.
The top 50 players have advanced to the BMW Championship, which takes place this week at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland from August 14-17.
The winner will receive an additional 2,000 FedExCup points, four times the amount for a regular PGA Tour event without the 36-hole cutoff.
