In October, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine is traditionally celebrated as a national holiday honoring all those who defend the independence and territorial integrity of the country. The holiday is established in honor of the Day of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, which has deep historical and religious roots as the patroness of the Ukrainian army, and is also associated with the day of the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

In honor of the holiday, one-time targeted aid payments have started in the capital, which will continue for several weeks. The total amount of funding amounted to about 90 million hryvnias, said Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Maryna Honda.
According to her, funds will be provided to more than 68 thousand Kyiv residents as part of the city program “Support for Kyiv residents – defenders of Ukraine.”
Five categories of citizens will receive assistance:

- military personnel and veterans with disabilities as a result of war;
- participants of the Revolution of Dignity who were injured;
- families of prisoners of war, missing and dead soldiers;
- families of Heroes of Ukraine;
- residents of the capital who directly defended Kyiv.
The amount of payments depends on belonging to a certain category and ranges from 1,200 to 2,500 hryvnias.
The Kyiv City State Administration notes that recipients do not need to apply additionally – the money will be automatically credited to those who are registered with social security authorities or the Pension Fund and actually live in the capital.

We also recall that on the eve of the holiday, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, by his decrees, awarded the title of “Hero City of Ukraine” to 16 settlements, and also signed a number of decrees on the awarding of the highest state award – the title of Hero of Ukraine.
