Grant Forrest won on home soil for the second time in his career, achieving a four-shot victory at the Nexo Championship and then receiving a video call from US President Donald Trump.
Forrest won the event at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, and shortly after receiving his trophy, he was congratulated via FaceTime by the course owner and 47th President of the United States.
“I watched… he's a great player. I'm looking forward to playing him – I'd play him tomorrow if he could get on a plane, frankly,” Trump said in a phone call released to Channel X by DP World Tour.
“What wonderful golf! What three great rounds! It's a great honor for you, thank you very much.”
Forrest, who won his first DP World Tour title at St Andrews four years and two days ago, took control of windy conditions at the weekend but his three-stroke lead was cut to two overnight after Todd Clements' birdie on the first hole.
However, when Forrest made his fourth birdie and Clements made a triple bogey eight on the same hole, the Scot took a five-shot lead and never looked back.
The world number 294, who made two bogeys in the final round, added two more birdies and a drop shot in the last 72 to finish eight under par.
“It's unbelievable, there are no words,” Forrest said. “It seems like it's the same week on the calendar that I won four years ago, so it's just amazing, it must say something about this week and being home.”
“I just can't believe it. It's been such a tough year for golf. It's just a crazy game: you can go out there and do something like it's out of nowhere.
“It's just an old truth that everything can change in one week, and that's what happened.”
Joe Dean made a nervous save at the end to finish second, four strokes back, with John Perry one stroke back along with Norway's Kristoffer Reitan and Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen.
Jordan Smith finished sixth, two shots back, while Clements, Andy Sullivan and Finland's Oliver Lindell were one shot back – the only nine players to finish under par.
