A British Air India plane crash survivor has shared the horror he felt watching people “die before his eyes”.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh told DD News: “I still can't believe that I survived,” he said from his hospital bed on Friday.
The 40-year-old told the presenter that shortly after take-off he felt as if the plane was “stuck in the air” and then the lights started flashing green and white, adding: “It suddenly crashed into a building and exploded.”
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college on Thursday in a fireball, killing all 241 people on board.
It is one of the deadliest air disasters in terms of UK fatalities and the first involving a 787 aircraft.
Speaking to DD News, Mr. Ramesh commented on the disaster: “I can’t believe I survived.
“For a moment I thought I would die too.
“But when I opened my eyes and looked around, I realized that I was alive.”
“I still don't understand how I survived.”
Mr Ramesh was seated in seat 11A, next to one of the plane's emergency exits.
Speaking about the events leading up to the incident, Mr Ramesh told the broadcaster: “When the plane took off, for five to 10 seconds it felt like it was stuck in the air.
“Suddenly the lights started flashing – green and white.
“The plane did not gain altitude and simply glided before it suddenly crashed into a building and exploded.”
He added: “At first I thought I was dead.
“Later I realized I was still alive and saw a hole in the fuselage.
“I managed to unfasten myself, stick my leg through this hole and crawl out.”
Commenting on his survival, Mr Ramesh said: “I don’t know how I survived.
“I watched people die before my eyes – flight attendants and two passengers I saw next to me… I crawled out from under the wreckage.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on Friday and was filmed speaking to Ramesh at the hospital.
There are concerns that the death toll on earth could rise.
