Rory McIlroy's well-wishers after his Masters success included two US presidents

Rory McIlroy is proud that his story of perseverance in achieving a career Grand Slam has touched people from “all walks of life”, including two US presidents.

McIlroy fulfilled his long-time dream of winning all four Grand Slam titles by becoming the Masters champion, beating Justin Rose in a thrilling playoff earlier this month.

The Northern Irish world number two ended an 11-year wait for a feat only five other players have achieved, sparking a wave of praise.

“It’s been an amazing few days of thinking about everything that’s happened and what it means,” McIlroy said at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

“For me, the main thing is how this whole journey has resonated with people and those who have contacted me. It has been absolutely amazing.

“It wasn't just golf. I talked to two presidents the next day, and it was pretty cool. Just people reaching out from all walks of life, whether it's sports, entertainment, or culture. All of it.

“People you wouldn't even think follow golf or know what's going on. It was very, very humbling.

“I think people sometimes see themselves in the difficulties and everything that they try to put into this journey to get the best out of themselves.

“I think seeing someone finally achieve the success they've been working towards for over a decade resonates with a lot of people.”

McIlroy's first appearance since winning the Masters will be to defend his title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Shane Lowry on Thursday.

The 35-year-old athlete has already overcome a serious illness that limited his ability to train, and is now ready to participate in the team competition.

“As you heard, I caught a bit of a cold on the way, so I feel a bit unwell,” he admitted.

“Today (Wednesday) is a very important day for me. I need to start hitting balls again and get back into shape.

“When I woke up on Monday morning, I could barely get out of bed, I felt so bad. Just being here and feeling better is an achievement.

“But I need to do a little bit of training to make sure I don't let this man (Lowry) down this week.

“It’s been an amazing few days but I’m excited and happy to be here with my mate and we’re looking forward to a great week and trying to defend the title.

“If you had asked me a year ago, would I be sitting here in this position, given everything that has happened…

“I honestly couldn't be in a better place in my life… professionally, personally, everything. It's amazing what a year can do.

“That tournament last year was a really cool moment for both of us. It kind of brought some joy back into golf for me. It's really, really important not to lose that.”
