Popular “eco” dishes turned out to be dangerous to health

Researchers from the University of Chemical Technology in Prague have found that so-called “eco-friendly” tableware made of bamboo and other biomaterials may pose a health risk. The work is published in the journal Food Control (FC).

An analysis of 33 samples of cups, bowls and children's sets purchased in the Czech Republic, the UK and China showed that almost a third of the products released melamine and formaldehyde – toxic industrial compounds used to create melamine plastics and which can migrate into food when heated or in contact with acid. In six cases, the concentration of melamine exceeded European safety standards.

Scientists note that the labeling “100 percent bamboo” or “biodegradable material” often misleads consumers. In fact, most of these products are plastic based on melamine formaldehyde resin, to which bamboo powder is added. This not only accelerates the destruction of the polymer, but also increases the release of toxic substances, in particular melamine, which is classified as a probable human carcinogen, and formaldehyde, a recognized carcinogen. In experiments, these substances were found even in ordinary drinks – hot tea with lemon and orange juice.

In addition to melamine and formaldehyde, the researchers found other contaminants. For example, pesticide residues were found in grain-based tableware, while traces of disinfectants were found in bamboo products. According to the authors, such products may be an additional source of chemical contamination of food.

Despite the ban on the use of bamboo in food contact plastics in the EU from 2021, such tableware is still freely sold online and in stores under the guise of “natural.” Scientists are calling for stricter controls and testing of eco-tableware to protect consumers from hidden risks.
