Moscow (Sputnik) – the Finnish government said Wednesday it has given its consent for the construction of the Nord stream 2 gas pipeline through its exclusive economic zone.
“On 5 April 2018, the government of Finland has agreed to 2 Nord stream AG project to build the pipeline in respect of the site, which passes through the exclusive economic zone of Finland,” – said in a statement.
According to the statement, a conditional consent, “which means that the applicant must fulfill the conditions presented in the government’s decision.”
“The party responsible for implementing the project must comply with the General principle of precaution in order to prevent and minimize accidents and damage must take into account the susceptibility and Vulnerability of the Baltic sea and other existing projects in the exclusive economic zone”, – said in a statement.
Later that same day, 2 Nord stream AG, the project operator of the pipeline “Nord stream 2”, said it was “very pleased to have received this permission”, however, one permit from Finland is not required.
“In Finland, Nord stream 2 needs to obtain two licences for the construction and operation of the pipeline in the Finnish EEZ. The second permit issued in accordance with the Law “on the water” and the decision is expected to be made within the next weeks”, – the press service of the company added that “Nord stream 2” will work about 374 kilometers (232 miles) in the Finnish exclusive economic zone.
The company has already received the necessary permits in Germany, while the national procedures of obtaining a permit in the other three countries along the route – Russia, Sweden and Denmark – are proceeding as planned, according to a press release.
2 Nord stream is a joint venture of the Russian company “Gazprom” and five European companies in France, engie, Austria’s omv AG in the UK-Dutch “Royal Dutch shell” and German wintershall and Uniper. The pipeline aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas a year to European Union through the Baltic sea to Germany.
The pipeline project was approved in some European countries such as Germany and Austria, as well as others, including States in Eastern Europe, which currently transit of Russian gas to Europe and could suffer transit revenues will fall if the “Nord stream 2” will be implemented.
