US releases redacted documents in Prince Harry immigration case

The US government on Tuesday released documents related to Prince Harry's 2020 visa trial, but much of the information was redacted because authorities said they needed to protect his privacy and there was no evidence he received any special status.

Conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation has filed a Freedom of Information Act request arguing the public has a right to know whether the British monarch disclosed his previous drug use, which he detailed in his memoir Spare, when he made his application.

More than 80 pages of court documents and transcripts were presented that day, with significant sections blacked out in black marker.

Immigration officials noted that the Heritage Trust had failed to show that the public interest outweighed Harry, Duke of Sussex's right to privacy.

“Plaintiffs argue that the records should be released because they could undermine public confidence in the government or reveal whether the Duke was given preferential treatment. However, their assertion does not establish any evidence of government misconduct,” wrote Jarrod Panter, an official with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, part of the Department of Homeland Security.

In his 2023 memoir, Harry revealed that he used cocaine and marijuana.

Harry and his American wife Meghan left their royal duties in the UK and moved to the US in 2020.

Representatives for Harry and the Estate did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
