Police say a gunman opened fire at the University of Florida, killing two people and wounding at least six.
Authorities say the suspected shooter is the 20-year-old son of a sheriff's deputy whose former service weapon was used in the attack.
Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbauer said the two victims were not students at the university, although the shooter was believed to be a student there.
Five people are being treated at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, including the suspected shooter, who is also receiving medical care, Mr. Trumbauer said.
Mr Trumbauer said the shooting happened around 11:50 a.m. Thursday when the gunman opened fire around the student union building.
Tallahassee Memorial Hospital confirmed six patients are being treated, one of whom is in critical condition.
Mr. Trumbauer added that authorities would not release information about the victims, including whether they were students.
However, he confirmed that the two victims were not university students.
Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil has revealed the identity of the alleged shooter and his connection to Deputy Jessica Ichner, who has been with the sheriff's office for more than 18 years.
Mr. McNeil said the alleged shooter was a regular participant in the sheriff's office's youth advisory council and had attended several training programs run by the office.
“This is certainly a heinous crime,” Mr McNeil said.
“We will do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice and show people that something like this will never be tolerated here in Leon County and, dare I say it, across the state and across the country.”
Asked about the shooting, US President Donald Trump described the situation as a “disgrace”, adding that he was “very familiar” with the school and the area.
