A cable car carrying tourists in southern Italy collapsed after a cable broke, killing at least four people and seriously injuring one, officials said.
On Thursday, a cable break stopped both the ascending and descending cables as they passed over Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia, between the famous tourist sites of Pompeii and Sorrento.
According to Naples Prefect Michele De Bari, the cable car ultimately crashed, causing casualties and injuries, while eight tourists and an operator were rescued from the descending cable car.
“The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream was activated, but obviously not the one in the cabin that was approaching the station,” said Castellammare Mayor Luigi Vicinanza.
Italian mountain rescue services, firefighters, police and civil protection services arrived at the scene.
