Turkey faces 'very risky week' due to forest fires

Turkey faces a “very dangerous week” in terms of wildfires, an official said, as blazes in parts of southeastern Europe and the Balkans have damaged homes and prompted a major firefighting operation that has required evacuations.

Almost 100 people have been brought to trial in connection with the fires in Turkey.

Fires broke out near Bursa, Turkey's fourth-largest city, over the weekend.

A forest fire northeast of Bursa has been largely extinguished, but a fire south of the city continues to burn, although its intensity has “significantly diminished,” Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli told reporters in Ankara.

He also said a fire that had been raging in Karabuk in northwestern Turkey for six days had “become less intense” and a fire in Karamanmaras in the south was largely under control.

A wildfire also broke out in forests outside the western port city of Izmir on Monday, where 11 aircraft were helping ground fire crews and residents battle the blaze.

“We are in a very risky week,” Mr Yumakli said of the wildfires.

Firefighters in Greece rushed to battle a forest fire that broke out near a university campus in central Athens on Monday.

Planes and helicopters circled over the city centre, dropping water, heading towards a wildfire burning near the National Technical University of Athens, which is located in the foothills surrounding the Greek capital.
