Trump says Musk will face 'very serious consequences' if he funds Democrats

Donald Trump said on Saturday there would be “serious consequences” if Elon Musk started funding US Democrats running against Republicans who back the president's sweeping tax and spending cuts, adding that his relationship with the billionaire donor was over.

In a telephone interview with NBC News, Mr. Trump did not elaborate on what consequences he had in mind, and said he had not discussed investigating Mr. Musk.

Asked whether he considered his relationships with the CEOs of Tesla and SpaceX over, Mr Trump replied: “I would assume so, yes.”

“No,” Mr. Trump said when asked by NBC whether he wanted to rebuild his ties with Mr. Musk.

This week, Mr Musk and Mr Trump have been at each other's throats, with Mr Musk calling Mr Trump's bill a “disgusting abomination”.

Mr Musk's opposition to the initiative makes it difficult to pass in Congress, where Republicans hold razor-thin majorities in both the House and Senate.

The bill narrowly passed the House last month and now goes to the Senate, where Trump's Republican allies are considering changes.

Independent analysts estimate that the bill will increase the US national debt by $2.4 trillion over 10 years.
