Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton Among Stars to Receive Honorary Oscars

It's been thirty-five years since Tom Cruise was first nominated for an Oscar, and now he's finally set to win his award.

Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen and “Do the Right Thing” production designer Wynn Thomas have been nominated for honorary Oscars at the annual Governors Awards ceremony, the Academy announced.

Dolly Parton will also be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her long-standing efforts in literacy and education.

“This year’s Governors Awards will recognize four extraordinary individuals whose significant careers and dedication to our film community continue to have a profound impact,” said Academy President Janet Young.

Historically, most winners of this award have not won a competitive Oscar.

Cruise, 62, has received four nominations: twice for best actor for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, once for best supporting actor for Magnolia and once for best picture for Top Gun: Maverick.

He also advocated for movie theater visits and large-scale Hollywood productions during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms. Yang emphasized Cruise's “phenomenal dedication to our film community, theatrical experience, and the stunt community.”

Parton has been nominated twice for Best Original Song, for “9 to 5” and in 2006 for “Travelin' Thru” from the film Transamerica.
