Technical problem in flight forces Air India to return to Hong Kong

An Air India flight returned to Hong Kong on Monday shortly after takeoff due to a technical problem in mid-air, just days after another Air India plane crashed, killing at least 270 people.

In a press release, Air India said the New Delhi-bound plane landed safely in Hong Kong and was undergoing “precautionary” checks.

Hong Kong Airport said in a separate statement that flight AI315 returned to the southern Chinese city's airport at around 1:00 p.m.

It was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the same model as the London-bound plane, that crashed into a medical college dormitory in a residential area of the northwestern Indian city of Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff on Thursday.

The crash killed 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. One passenger survived.

India's national carrier said alternative arrangements had been made to get the affected passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
