Sean 'Diddy' Combs asks to be released on $50 million bail pending sentencing

Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is asking a judge to release him on $50 million bail pending sentencing in October after a jury found him not guilty of the most serious federal charges brought against him earlier this month.

In a court filing Tuesday, Combs' attorney argued that conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn are dangerous, pointing out that others convicted of similar prostitution-related crimes are routinely released before sentencing.

“Sean Combs should not be in prison for actions like this,” said Mark Agnifilo.

“In fact, he may be the only person currently in prison in the United States for being some kind of toilet, and certainly the only person in prison for hiring grown men as escorts for himself and his girlfriend.”

A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation.

Prosecutors had previously said there was a risk he would escape.

Combs, 55, faces up to 10 years in prison on two counts of transporting people across the country for the purpose of prostitution, including his girlfriends and male prostitutes for sexual contact.

A conviction for conspiracy to commit extortion or sex trafficking could have resulted in a life sentence for one of hip-hop's most prominent figures.

Immediately after the July 2 acquittal, Mr. Agnifilo filed a motion to release Combs on bail.

However, Judge Arun Subramanian denied the request, saying Combs had not provided sufficient and convincing evidence at the time that he was “not a threat to any person or the public.”

Combs is the latest high-profile inmate to be housed at MDC Brooklyn, the only federal prison in New York City, joining a list that includes R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell and cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.
