Sean 'Diddy' Combs asks to be released on $50 million bail pending sentencing

Music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs has filed a motion to be released on $50 million bail pending sentencing in October, after a jury acquitted him of the most serious federal charges brought against him this month.

In a court filing Tuesday, Combs' defense attorney argued that conditions at the Brooklyn detention center were dangerous, noting that others convicted of similar prostitution-related crimes are typically released on bail pending trial.

“Sean Combs should not be in jail for actions like this,” said attorney Mark Agnifilo.

“In fact, he is probably the only person in the United States currently incarcerated for providing escort services for personal use, and certainly the only person arrested for soliciting adult males as escorts for himself and his female partner.”

Representatives of the federal prosecutor's office in Manhattan had not commented on the defense's request at the time of publication.

Earlier, the prosecution insisted that there was still a possibility that the accused might attempt to escape.

The 55-year-old producer faces up to 10 years in prison on two counts of organizing the interstate movement of people for prostitution, including providing escort services to both women and men.

A charge of organizing sex trafficking or forced exploitation could have resulted in life in prison for one of the hip-hop industry's most famous figures.

Immediately after the acquittal was announced on July 2, the defense immediately initiated bail proceedings.

However, Judge Arun Subramanian rejected the motion, saying the defence had not provided sufficient evidence at that time to show “no threat to the community or individuals”.

Combs has become the latest high-profile inmate to be incarcerated at MDC Brooklyn, New York City's only federal prison, joining a list that previously included R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, and cryptocurrency exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
