Multiple casualties were likely after gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on holidaymakers in Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said. Police described it as an “act of terrorism” and blamed it on militants who oppose Indian rule.
“This attack is far beyond anything we have seen against civilians in recent years,” Omar Abdullah, a senior elected official in the region, said on social media.
“The death toll is still being clarified, so I don’t want to go into details,” he added.
Gunmen allegedly opened fire on tourists, mostly from India, who were in the Baisaran meadow, about three miles (5 km) from the resort town of Pahalgam in the disputed area. Police said several of the tourists were shot and wounded and authorities were evacuating them to medical facilities.
Police and military personnel cordoned off the area and began searching for the attackers.
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has travelled to Srinagar, the main city in Indian-administered Kashmir, where he said he would assess the situation.
Mr Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, had been informed about the incident.
