Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would soon speak with US President Donald Trump after the president announced 25 per cent tariffs on car imports.
Mr. Carney, who has not had contact with Mr. Trump since becoming Canada's prime minister nearly two weeks ago, said the US president contacted him on Wednesday evening to set up a meeting.
“We'll be talking soon, certainly within the next day or two,” Mr. Carney said.
Mr Carney said Mr Trump should respect Canada's sovereignty.
“It's not too much to ask, but it seems to be difficult for him,” he added.
Mr Trump has declared a trade war with Canada and continues to urge Canada to become the 51st US state, angering Canadians.
Mr. Carney was sworn in as Canada's new prime minister on March 14.
It is unusual for the US President and the Canadian Prime Minister to go so long without communicating after a change in leadership.
Mr Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as Canada's leader and head of the Liberal Party, begins a five-week campaign after calling a snap election for April 28.
The ruling Liberal Party appeared on the brink of a historic defeat in the upcoming election until Mr Trump launched a trade war and questioned Canada's sovereignty.
The crisis has sparked a surge of patriotism among Canadians, with many believing Mr. Carney is the best candidate to lead the country at this time.
