UK Activists Picket Ukrainian Embassy on Anniversary of Donbass Operation

London (Sputnik) – British activists in support of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have gathered near the Embassy of Ukraine in London on Saturday, which marked the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Kiev offensive in the breakaway regions, Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene.

“This is part of a series of protests that we have supported to show our solidarity with the people of Donetsk and Lugansk, and condemning the Kiev regime and the role of the British government in support of this regime,” Andy Brooks General Secretary new Communist party of great Britain, the official said.

The Minsk agreement froze the conflict in Ukraine, to a certain extent, although the fight never stopped actually, he said.

“That’s why we participate in such events to support the people of Donbass and to support the call for peace and a democratic solution to the crisis in Ukraine,” added Brooks.

Four years ago NATO forces was the creation of an atmosphere of hate against Russia on the Crimean issue and the situation in the East of Ukraine, Brooks continues.

“Now they are still doing it Skripals and a number of other issues, but to some extent they turned their attention to other aspects of the Russian scare… although what we saw in Syria yesterday was gunboat diplomacy, so the risk of more tension there is,” he concluded.

The conflict in the Donbass began on April 14, 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk national republics, which refused to recognize the new government in Kiev that came to power after what they considered a coup.

In February 2015 the warring parties signed the Minsk peace agreement on the cessation of hostilities in the region, but the situation remains tense, with both sides accusing each other of violating the truce.

On Friday, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the “antiterrorist operation” in the Donbas will end on 30 April, adding that it would mean a shift of work Format.
