The final round of the U.S. Open golf championship at Oakmont was temporarily suspended due to heavy rain that flooded part of the course.
Play was stopped at 4:01pm local time (9:01pm BST) after a powerful storm hit the Pittsburgh area, causing significant water accumulation on the greens.
Tournament leader Sam Burns held a one-stroke lead over rival Adam Scott after both players overcame a difficult seven-hole start.
Burns had two penalties and is now at two points, while Scott is one point behind as both men struggled on the course.
England's Tyrrell Hatton moved up to third after overcoming a difficult start to hold his position at one over par, although he ran into trouble on the ninth hole when his luck turned against him.
Robert MacIntyre of Oban, Scotland, also recovered from two bogeys on the first three holes to move up to seventh on the leaderboard.
His birdie on the par-five fourth hole was the turning point, and a birdie on the ninth put him back three up, five behind Burns.
It was a disastrous start for JJ Spawn, who started the game one shot behind Burns, but his chances quickly faded.
After missing his first shot, he seemed to hit a perfect second shot from 94 yards out. The ball was so accurate that it hit the flag before rolling down the hill and coming to rest just 40 yards further than his previous shot.
As a result, he suffered a setback and lost several more strokes on the third, fifth and sixth holes, so that his chances quickly disappeared.
Spaniard Jon Ram was in charge of the club when play was suspended.
The 2021 champion struggled on the Oakmont course this week but was in good spirits after posting a 67 (three under par) to be his best score of the day alongside Rory McIlroy.
Rahm made birdies on his final three holes to move into a four-shot lead at No. 8 and can now sit back and watch the leaders battle it out in the rain when play resumes.
He said: “It's crazy because it doesn't feel like I played any differently than every other round.
“Two key things: Number one, I kept the ball in play off the tee. I'm trying to get through the round. I was basically in the fairway or on the first shot most of the day.
“Then my delay. I had really good speed today. I felt really comfortable, if you can say that, at Oakmont, with that speed, and it showed.
“Every long shot I hit was just a shot and I didn't have to strain myself. That helps a lot.”
McIlroy at least finished on a high note, posting his best result of the week and, to some extent, exorcising the Oakmont golf course demons that had plagued him for the first three days.
The 36-year-old played his best golf of the week, showing the precision and finesse he lacked on Thursday and Friday to shoot three under par (67) and then finish seven over par.
