Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper to meet in first round of US Open qualifying

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper will take to the court against qualifiers in the first round of the US Open.

The pair are the main bets for British fans to win in New York, with Draper aiming to repeat last year's success by reaching the semi-finals again.

Seeded fifth, the 23-year-old initially had a relatively good draw, although he could face reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals, a round earlier than last season.

Draper is looking to quickly return to form on his beloved hard courts after being forced to miss the Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati due to a hand injury.

He has not competed in singles since his disappointing defeat to Marin Cilic in the second round of Wimbledon, but has played three matches in the new mixed doubles with American Jessica Pegula, their duo beating Raducana and Carlos Alcaraz in their opening encounter.

Raducanu has continued to show consistent play in recent months, rising to 35th in the world rankings but just outside the seeding.

She is still looking for a first win at Flushing Meadows since her 2021 triumph as a qualifier and despite being the clear favourite in the opening match, she will face tougher tests in the later rounds.

In the second round, the 22-year-old Briton could face 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova, and in the third, the tournament's ninth seed Elena Rybakina.

However, Raducanu is ready for the fight: last week in Cincinnati, in her debut tournament under the guidance of new coach Francisco Roig, she took world number one Aryna Sabalenka to the final tie-break.

Other British players have tough opponents: Katie Boulter, who is going through a tough period after Wimbledon, will face 27th seed Marta Kostyuk, while Sonay Kartal will play against 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.

In the men's singles, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Cameron Norrie will face American Sebastian Korda, while Jacob Fearnley, making his US Open debut, will face Roberto Bautista Agut, with the winner likely to play third seed Alexander Zverev.

Top seed Jannik Sinner, who was training on Thursday after an emotional withdrawal from the Cincinnati final against Alcaraz on Monday due to health problems, was drawn in the opposite half of the draw from Novak Djokovic and the Spaniard, who will begin the tournament with a tough match against American giant Reilly Opelka.

Defending champion Sabalenka opens against Spain's Rebeca Masarova, with second seed Iga Swiatek and third seed Coco Gauff in the lower half of the draw.

Venus Williams, who received a wild card 28 years after her debut at the tournament, will play a dangerous opponent at the age of 45: 11th seed Karolina Muchova.

The main games of the tournament start on Sunday.
