The Belgian Defence Ministry has said three Belgian soldiers were injured in a “shooting incident” during an exercise in Scotland.
The ministry confirmed that two soldiers were in stable condition and one of them was expected to undergo surgery in Scotland before returning to Belgium.
The third soldier was taken to a medical facility with minor injuries and has since been released.
About a dozen soldiers also suffered hearing damage in connection with the incident.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “Three Belgian soldiers were injured on 12 May during Exercise Red Condor, currently taking place in Scotland.
“They were given first aid on the spot and then transferred to a local hospital. In addition, about a dozen soldiers suffered hearing damage.
“Military authorities have confirmed that the two soldiers who were seriously injured are now in a stable condition.
“They have already been able to contact their families. One of them will undergo surgery in Scotland before being repatriated to Belgium.
“The third soldier received minor injuries and has already returned to the military camp.”
The spokesman added: “The families of the victims have been notified.
“The incident occurred during a scheduled exercise. An investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances.”
Last week it was reported that around 600 Belgian troops were in Morea to take part in the Red Condor exercise.
In his message on X, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever expressed condolences to the wounded soldiers and their families.
“I have received the sad news that three soldiers from 3rd Parachute Battalion have been injured during training in Scotland,” he wrote.
“I wish the wounded a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with their loved ones.”
