Senator Jim Justice, a Republican from West Virginia, along with his spouse, have consented to remit over $5 million to the Internal Revenue Service for previously delinquent federal income taxes going back as far as 2009, based on court documents submitted on Monday.
The West Virginia senator made the commitment to settle that substantial amount merely hours after the Justice Department brought a lawsuit against him and his wife, Cathy Justice, acting on behalf of IRS revenue agents, who indicated they had consistently tried to recover the outstanding taxes, but without success, according to a legal filing submitted earlier on Monday.
“Despite notification and demand for payment of the assessments,” the legal action stated, “[Justice] and Cathy L. Justice have failed or declined to provide complete payment of those assessments to the United States.”

Justice will be responsible for $5,164,739.75, “in addition to mandated interest and other tax augmentations accruing subsequently,” according to the resolution agreement, which is still pending judicial approval.
A representative for Justice chose not to offer any remarks. His legal team did not promptly acknowledge a request for their input.
This represents only the most recent tax-related matter Justice has faced lately. In the prior month, West Virginia state tax officials purportedly placed a $1.36 million lien on the upscale Greenbrier Hotel, which is both owned and managed by the Justice family.
