Technical problem in flight forces Air India to return to Hong Kong

An Air India flight was forced to return to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff on Monday due to a technical problem in mid-air, just days after another Air India plane crashed, killing at least 270 people.

In a statement, Air India said the plane, which was bound for New Delhi, landed safely in Hong Kong and was now undergoing checks “as a precautionary measure.”

Hong Kong Airport Authority also released a separate statement, clarifying that flight AI315 returned to the airport in the southern Chinese city at around 1:00 p.m.

The plane was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the same model as the London-bound jet that crashed into a medical college dormitory in a residential area of the northwestern Indian city of Ahmedabad just minutes after takeoff on Thursday.

The crash killed 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. One passenger survived.

India's national carrier said alternative arrangements had been made to quickly transport the affected passengers to their destinations.
