The Department of Homeland Security stated that an undocumented migrant died after being hit by a car on a freeway while allegedly attempting to evade immigration officers.

A DHS representative mentioned that Jose Castro-Rivera and other individuals in a vehicle were stopped by ICE agents on Thursday as part of a "focused, intelligence-driven immigration enforcement action." DHS did not offer additional specifics concerning the action.

Even though DHS did not specify where the event transpired, the Virginia State Police indicated it occurred on Interstate 264 in Norfolk at around 11 a.m. and stated that Castro-Rivera was struck by a 2002 Ford pickup truck and was declared dead at the location. Their account noted he was 24 years of age.

DHS conveyed that Castro-Rivera "strenuously resisted" and escaped onto the freeway, where he was fatally hit. The agency did not provide details concerning Castro-Rivera’s supposed resistance.

"One of our ICE agents performed CPR on Castro-Rivera in an effort to save his life. Regrettably, Castro-Rivera passed away. The agent then informed the three detained foreign nationals that their friend had died. He then mourned and prayed together with them," the representative stated.

It remains unclear what became of the other passengers in the vehicle or the driver of the pickup truck.

The Virginia State Police indicated that their initial investigation suggested that Castro-Rivera was fleeing from an ICE pursuit when he exited a vehicle and attempted to cross the interstate. They mentioned they were not part of the pursuit and were only investigating the resulting incident.

DHS partially attributed Castro-Rivera's death to those who disseminate "false information" and methods to prevent detention, which it claims has inspired people to resist its personnel.

"Regrettably, this is the lamentable outcome of such defiance," the representative remarked.
