Steel War: US Metals Tariffs May Lead to Russian Reprisals

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich announced on Friday that Russia is considering retaliatory measures after the decision of the President of the United States Donald trump impose strict tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

According to Dvorkovich, metallurgical companies will present their proposals for responses within a few days. The Parliament plans to discuss them in the second half of the month after the economic forum in Krasnoyarsk from 12 to 14 April.

In early March, the Russian Ministry of industry and trade’s press Secretary noted that the Department began to work on possible countermeasures in response to protectionist policies, adding that after negotiations with Washington, Russia may appeal to the world trade organization.

March 23, trump has fulfilled a campaign promise and imposed a tariff of 25% on steel imports and the 10 percent tariff on aluminium, but in addition Canada and Mexico, and hinting that other countries could be spared on grounds of national security. Experts warn that rates could spark a major trade war.

Russia is among the five largest exporters of steel and aluminium in the United States. However, according to analysts, in the country mining and metallurgical companies relatively little harm from any sort of duties on steel and aluminium imports entered the United States.

Dvorkovich agreed with the assessment, saying he was expecting some damage to Russia from the new duties, but added that any damage will be more significant for the European Union and China.

China responded quickly to the tariffs trump the economic constraints of its own and formally initiated a dispute settlement procedure in the WTO, the Ministry of Commerce of China.
