Rescuers find body during rescue operation to save people trapped in Chile copper mine

Rescue teams have found a body at a copper mine in Chile that collapsed two days ago after a moderate earthquake, the mine's director said Saturday.

Rescuers are struggling to reach five miners who were trapped in the El Teniente mine in central Chile on Thursday evening after a rock collapse occurred during a magnitude 4.2 earthquake.

This copper mine is one of the largest in Chile.

A spokesman for a rescue team trying to drill through 295 feet of rock to reach the miners said the body found Saturday belonged to one of the five trapped miners.

El Teniente director Andres Music said authorities were still working to identify the body.

The body of another miner (not one of the five still trapped) – identified as Paulo Marin Tapia – was found on Friday, shortly after the partial collapse of the mine.

Nine other miners were injured, according to Chile's National Copper Corporation Codelco, which described the incident as the result of a “seismic event.”
