West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of match-fixing charges

Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of misconduct charges relating to alleged breaches of Football Association betting rules, his club West Ham have announced.

In May 2024, the Brazilian was charged by the Football Association with four alleged breaches of Football Association Rule E5.1 in connection with matches involving West Ham.

It was alleged that Paqueta attempted to directly influence the outcome of matches by deliberately seeking to obtain a card from a referee with the improper purpose of influencing the betting market so that one or more persons could profit from betting.

He denied the allegations and an independent regulatory commission found them unproven following a hearing. The Football Association said two charges against Paquette, alleging failure to cooperate with the investigation, had been upheld.

The FA noted that the commission will decide on the appropriate sanction for proven violations “at the earliest opportunity”.

The matches Paqueta allegedly attempted to influence included the Hammers' Premier League games against Leicester on 12 November 2022, Aston Villa on 12 March 2023, Leeds on 21 May 2023 and Bournemouth on 12 August 2023.

Paqueta said in quotes released through the club: “From the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence of these extremely serious charges.

“I can’t say anything more now, but I would like to express my gratitude to God and my desire to return to playing football with a smile on my face.

“To my wife who has always supported me, West Ham United, the fans who have always encouraged me, my family, friends and the legal team who have been with me – thank you for everything.”

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady added: “We are delighted that Lucas has been cleared.

“He has maintained his innocence from the outset and we, as a club, have been resolute in our support of him throughout the process.

“Despite the enormous pressure placed on him, Lucas played for the club every week, always giving his all.

“It was a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he showed absolute professionalism throughout.
