New York shooter intended to target NFL offices but took wrong elevator, mayor says

New York Mayor Eric Adams says the gunman who killed four people in a Manhattan office building intended to attack the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) but took the wrong elevator.

Investigators believe Shane Tamura of Las Vegas was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby on Monday but accidentally took the wrong elevator, Adams said in an interview Tuesday.

Four people were killed, including an off-duty New York City police officer.

Police said Mr. Tamura had a history of mental health issues and a rambling note found near his body indicated he had a claim against the NFL over an unfounded belief he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Almost two decades ago, he played American football in high school in California but never played in the NFL.

“It looks like he blamed the NFL,” the mayor said. “The building was the NFL's headquarters, and he accidentally took the wrong elevator.”

The note said he suffered from CTE, a degenerative brain disease associated with concussions and other head injuries common in contact sports, and asked that his brain be examined after he died, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

One informed source mentioned that it also contains a reference to the National Football League.

The note also mentioned former NFL player Terry Long, who was diagnosed with chronic encephalopathy syndrome, and how Mr. Long committed suicide in 2005. The NFL is accused of hiding information about the risks to players' brains for profit.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the shooting “an unspeakable act of violence in our building,” adding that he was extremely grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded and the officer who gave his life protecting others.

The shooting took place in the skyscraper that houses the headquarters of the NFL and Blackstone, one of the world's largest investment firms, as well as other tenants.
