Russian drones attack two Ukrainian cities, killing at least one person

Russian drones have attacked two Ukrainian cities, authorities said, killing at least one person in overnight attacks.

Officials said the southern port city of Odessa and northeastern Kharkiv were hit on Friday, causing damage to residential buildings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that nearly twenty civilians, including girls aged 17 and 12, were injured as a result of attacks by more than 20 drones.

The strikes came as a Kremlin spokesman said dates for a new round of direct peace talks were expected to be announced next week.

“Russia continues to use targeted terror tactics against our people,” Mr. Zelensky said on the Telegram messenger, calling on the United States and the European Union to increase economic pressure on Moscow.

Russia shows no sign of slowing down its attacks more than three years after invading its neighbor, launching a summer offensive along a 620-mile front line and continuing to launch long-range strikes into civilian areas.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that a date for the next round of peace talks would likely be agreed upon next week.

Kyiv authorities have made no recent announcements about resuming talks with Russia, which last took place at a meeting of delegations in Istanbul on June 2, although Ukraine continues to propose a ceasefire and support U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to end the fighting.
