Bryson DeChambeau and Russell Henley strengthened their chances of making the Ryder Cup team with strong performances at the Open, while Sergio Garcia reiterated his desire to play for Team Europe.
DeChambeau recovered from a first-round 78 to finish in the top 10 at Royal Portrush, where Scottie Scheffler cruised to a comfortable victory, leaving the two-time U.S. Open champion fifth in the U.S. team's automatic berth.
Only the top six finishers in the standings after the BMW Championship on Aug. 17 qualify automatically, and DeChambeau cannot earn additional qualifying points because he is playing at LIV Golf.

On the Sky Sports Golf podcast, Wayne Riley believes the Europeans are now favourites for the Ryder Cup amid debate over whether Keegan Bradley should be captain of the US team.
The two-time US Open champion revealed that Keegan Bradley left personal messages for his American players during the final major weekend of the year, and DeChambeau expressed gratitude for that ahead of a possible third Ryder Cup appearance.
“I talked to him a little bit, and then he put something in our lockers that was pretty inspiring,” DeChambeau said after his final-round 64. “It's a personal message. It means a lot to me.”

Speaking about what he can bring to Team USA, DeChambeau added: “I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a lot of support from the fans that are going to be rooting for us.”
DeChambeau could still fall out of the top six and was not part of the U.S. team in Rome two years ago, though Bradley has made it clear he will be in the race regardless of whether he qualifies automatically.
“Bryson is going to be a huge part of us winning the Ryder Cup,” Bradley told Sports Illustrated. “He brings a lot to the table. He brings energy, passion, but most importantly, he’s one of the best players on the planet.”
