Police say seven shots fired in Washington state park

Police said seven people were shot, three of them in critical condition, in a park in suburban Tacoma, Washington, on Wednesday night.

Lakewood Police Sergeant Charles Porsch told KOMO-TV that officers encountered a “very chaotic situation” when they responded to calls reporting shots fired at Harry Todd Park in Lakewood just before 8 p.m.

According to him, doctors took five of the victims to hospitals, while two others made their way to medical facilities on their own.

Sergeant Porche said three people were in critical condition, the Seattle Times reported.

He also added that investigators are not sure how many shooters there were or whether the victims were chosen at random.

As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made.

More than 100 people were in the park near American Lake when shots were fired, Sgt. Porche said.

“We had a few days where the sun finally came out and it was a great time for people to go outside and enjoy the park, the lake, and then something terrible happened,” he said.

“It's one of the biggest tragedies, isn't it? Nobody wants to see somebody shot and then have seven victims because of this act of violence, the cause of which, at this point, we don't know.”

The shooting came days after an incident in a Philadelphia park on Memorial Day that left two people dead and nine injured.
