India says it pledges to avoid escalation if Pakistan reciprocates

India carried out attacks on Pakistani military installations after Islamabad fired several high-speed missiles at Indian air bases in Punjab state, but said it was seeking to avoid conflict if Pakistan responded in kind.

Saturday's attack represents a fresh escalation in tensions sparked by last month's massacre, which India blames on Pakistan.

Pakistan earlier said it had intercepted most of the missiles aimed at three air bases and that retaliatory strikes on India were already underway.

Indian Army Colonel Sophia Qureshi told a news conference in New Delhi that Pakistan had also attacked medical facilities and educational institutions at three of its air bases in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“Pakistan’s actions were responded to adequately,” she noted.

Squadron Leader Vyomika Singh, who was also present at the press conference, stressed that India adheres to the principle of “non-escalation if the Pakistani side responds in kind”.

However, she said there was a mobilisation of Pakistani ground forces towards forward positions, which “indicates offensive intent with the aim of further escalation.”
