A Yemeni government source told Reuters on Sunday that the preparations are underway to transfer Yemen’s President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi to the United States tonight to receive medical treatment.
According to Reuters, Hadi would stay in the United States until the United Nations General Assembly meeting at the end of September.
Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government headed by Hadi and Houthi rebels since 2015. The Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf nations has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi’s request since March 2015.
Hadi has been living in exile in Riyadh since the Houthi rebels seized the capital of Yemen Sanaa and has been treated for a heart condition since 2011.
