UK to recognise Palestine in September unless Israel 'takes steps' on Gaza

Keir Starmer has told his cabinet that Britain will recognise the state of Palestine “in September” unless Israel takes “significant steps” to end the “catastrophic situation in Gaza”.

The British Prime Minister interrupted the government's summer recess to discuss the current situation.

According to minutes of the Cabinet meeting released by Downing Street, Starmer told ministers that “now is the time to put forward that position” on a two-state solution.

The text further stated: “He noted that with the situation in Gaza deteriorating and the prospects for a two-state peace process becoming increasingly uncertain, now is the time to move this position forward.

He said Britain would recognise the state of Palestine in September at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) unless the Israeli government took significant steps to resolve the dire situation in Gaza, reached a ceasefire, made it clear there would be no annexation of the West Bank and committed to a long-term peace process that would deliver a two-state solution.

It comes as the UK prime minister comes under increasing pressure to recognise Palestine amid warnings of famine in Gaza.
