New York (Sputnik) – US President Donald trump’s lawyer, Joanna Hendon on Friday convinced a US Federal court to give a trump card to Monday, to determine what records confiscated by the FBI from his personal lawyer Michael Cohen must be kept secret from Federal prosecutors.
“As the privilege holder, he [trump] a keen interest in these cases and how these materials are reviewed,” Hendon said, asking the judge Kimba wood in the U.S. district court for the southern district of new York to postpone the hearing until next Monday. “I’m not trying to delay. I’m just trying to make sure that it is made in good faith.”
Under American law, communications between lawyers and their clients are privileged and must remain confidential, but judges can grant exceptions in cases involving a criminal offense.
On Monday, the FBI raided the office of a priest, a room in the hotel and home, seizing many documents and other evidence.
The RAID was the result of a tip from the special adviser Robert Mueller, who is investigating the alleged involvement of Russia in the 2016 election in the United States and the alleged collusion between Moscow and the team of the trump campaign. Russia and trump have both denied allegations of collusion, and the Kremlin has called the accusations that he intervened in the elections “absurd.”
Cohen is trying to stop the U.S. government from reviewing the documents. He said in a court filing that the seized materials needs to be considered by his lawyers to determine which ones should remain protected by attorney-client privilege.
Hendon claimed that trump is within his rights to oppose the disclosure of documents relating to his long-time legal representation Cohen.
Judge wood postponed to Monday the hearing in which attorneys Cohen will argue in court to temporarily prohibit Federal prosecutors from inspection records.
Earlier in the day, the press Secretary of the White house Sarah Sanders could not confirm whether Cohen continues to serve as the President’s personal lawyer Donald trump despite the fact that the subject of a criminal investigation.
When asked whether trump is still associated with Cohen, Sanders said, “I’m not sure… need to check.”
