Spain, Portugal and Greece battle wildfires as heatwave expected to last for days

Fire services in Spain, Portugal and Greece continue to battle wildfires on the bank holiday as hot, dry weather hampers efforts to control the blazes.

There are currently 14 major fires being fought in Spain, according to Virginia Barcones, director general of emergency services.

Temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend.

“Today will again be an extremely difficult day, with a high risk of new fires,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote in a message on X.

The national meteorological agency AEMET has warned of extreme fire danger across large parts of the country, including areas where the biggest fires are raging in the north and west.

The heatwave, which has seen temperatures exceed 40C on several days this month, is expected to continue until Monday.

Fires in Galicia have forced the closure of several highways.

Services on the high-speed rail line connecting the region with the Spanish capital Madrid remain suspended.

Fires in Spain have burned 158,000 hectares, or 610 square miles, this year, according to the European Union's European Wildfire Information System.

This corresponds to an area roughly equal to the size of London.
