State Dept Backs UK Assertion That Russia Responsible for Skripal Attack

Washington (Sputnik) – the United States continues to fully support the UK’s assessment of what Russia is responsible for the nerve gas attack on the former intelligence officer Sergei Skripal, even after a special meeting with the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons, Executive Council of the State Department press Secretary Heather Nauert said in a press release.

“We fully support the UK and today’s need for special meetings of the Executive Council of the OPCW and the UN Security Council to discuss the attack with chemical weapons in Salisbury and a detailed independent analysis of the OPCW,” Nauert said after the meeting Wednesday. “As we have made clear that the United States agrees with the assessment of SK that Russia is responsible for the use of chemical weapons on UK soil or through intentional use or through his failure to declare and reliability of its stockpile of this nerve gas.”

In Skripals was found unconscious on March 4, on a bench in the Mall in Salisbury, United Kingdom. London immediately accused Moscow of organizing poisoning using A234 nerve agents. Russia rejects the accusations and points to a complete lack of evidence to support claims.

Earlier in the day the UK’s permanent representative to the UN Karen pierce stated that the OPCW confirmed that the UK’s military nerve class was used in the attack against the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, England.

Russia’s envoy to the UN said that the OPCW report does not include any information that will help the UK government to prove allegations of Russian involvement in the attack of nerve gas against Skripals.
