The season of cheap vegetables is over: prices for familiar goods are rising in Ukraine

A month after the drop in cucumber prices in early September, the situation has reversed. Now, on the contrary, the price of this vegetable has started to increase.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

This is reported by the EastFruit project, according to which Ukrainian greenhouse plants offer cucumbers for sale at 35-55 UAH/kg ($0.85-1.33/kg), which is an average of 14% more expensive than at the end of the last working week. There are a number of important reasons for such a noticeable increase in just one week.

According to project analysts, there are three main reasons for this, which are simultaneously putting pressure on the market:

  • The supply of cucumbers on the market has decreased slightly due to worsening weather, which has led to a shortage of the vegetable in both stationary plants and film greenhouses;
  • maintaining high demand for cucumbers;
  • lack of serious competition from imported cucumbers, which would allow expanding the supply of the product and reducing its price.

As a result, according to the Ministry of Finance portal, the cost of cucumbers in Ukraine ranges from 52 to 86 hryvnias per kilogram, while in September it was from 38 to 75 hryvnias.

At the same time, EastFruit emphasized that even after the latest increase, greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine cost 23% less than in the same period last year. Indeed, according to the same Ministry of Finance, the most expensive cucumbers in October 2024 cost Ukrainians 106 hryvnias per kilogram.

However, there is hope that the price of cucumbers in Ukraine will still decrease, which may be facilitated by the increase in the cost of the vegetable. This may result in an increase in cucumber imports, and therefore, market saturation and a decrease in prices.

Meanwhile, prices for other vegetables, such as carrots, have also begun to rise in Ukraine, and therefore the era of cheap vegetables seems to be coming to an end.
