The price of Ukrainians' “second bread” will rise in a month: what to do to save money now, and will it reach 30 hryvnias per kilogram?

Until about mid-October, the prices of potatoes, or the “second bread” for many Ukrainians, will be relatively cheap. However, this situation will then end with an increase in the prices of this vegetable, so the expert gives advice on how to save as much as possible while it is still possible.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

This advice is given by Oleg Pendzin, director of the economic discussion club , who reminds that after harvesting potatoes, their price increases due to fuel prices, which are not cheap in Ukraine today. As a result, he advises buying potatoes at the cheapest prices in the villages.

“If you want it cheaper, you need to go to the villages and buy directly from the plots from the owners, you can find them for 12−13 hryvnias per kilogram. In stores, the price will be about twice as high. When the mass harvest begins, potatoes can cost 14−15 hryvnias per kilogram,” the expert noted.

He predicts that potato prices will increase starting in mid-October, when the cost of storing them will increase, which will inevitably push their wholesale and retail prices up.

Note that according to the Ministry of Finance portal, potatoes in Ukraine are indeed getting cheaper compared to August. Thus, the average price of regular potatoes fell from 18 to 15.8 UAH per kg, although pink and young potatoes, on the contrary, rose in price – to 27 and 33.2 UAH, respectively (in August 25 and 22.5 UAH). Compared to August 2024, the price of potatoes in Ukraine is noticeably cheaper – only 15.8 UAH against 18 UAH, 26 UAH for young and pink potatoes in 2024 and 22.5 and 25 UAH last month.

Since experts predict an increase in prices for “second bread” already in October, we can focus on the price range from 28 hryvnias for regular potatoes to 40 hryvnias per kg of new potatoes, as was the case in October 2024.

As previously reported by “FACTS”, cucumber prices in Ukraine fell unexpectedly, although it is unlikely to last long.
