Belgian Foreign Minister Warns Against Escalation Over Alleged Douma Attack

Brussels (Sputnik) – the foreign Minister of Belgium Didier Reynders on Friday called on the United Nations considering the response to the alleged attack with chemical weapons in Syria to resolve the issue peacefully and avoid military escalation in the war-torn country.

“We have to wait. Of course, we should avoid military escalation. A political solution is necessary. We need to put pressure on the Syrian regime to return to the negotiating table and discuss a solution,” said Reynders, with reference to the broadcaster rtbf.

According to rtbf, Reynders discussed the possible military action by the West against Syria with his German colleague Heiko Maas.

The situation in Syria has worsened considerably over the past week over alleged chemical attack in the city of Duma, located in Damascus suburb of Eastern ghouta combat readiness, reports of which appeared on Saturday. The EU and the US were quick to blame the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the incident, but Damascus has denied the allegations.

The US President Donald trump, the President of France Emmanuel macron and Prime Minister of great Britain Theresa may agreed on Tuesday that the international community should respond to the alleged attack with chemical weapons.

On Wednesday, trump said that Russia, which supports Assad, should “prepare” as “good” and “smart” missiles were to strike Syria, but took a step back the next day, saying that he never specified the time of the missile can be fired.

Moscow has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged assault should be conducted before conclusions. Earlier on Friday, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow had irrefutable evidence that the incident Duma was staged with the participation of foreign intelligence services.
