Mike Lynch's superyacht spotted on surface for first time since sinking

Mike Lynch's superyacht is being bailed out as it is seen floating upright for the first time since it sank off the coast of Sicily.

Seven people died when the Bayesian sank off the Italian island on August 19 last year, including billionaire Mr Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18.

The 56-metre yacht was spotted upright, supported by one of Europe's most powerful offshore cranes, off the fishing town of Porticello on Saturday morning.

A project source told the PA news agency: “The vessel is on the surface but has not yet left the sea.

“The pumping out of water continues, and only by lunchtime, after a series of lifting and resting procedures, will the ship finally be completely and finally out of the water.”

Rescuers could be seen on board, the yacht was covered in mud and seaweed, and the awning and guard rails were damaged.

Investigators from Britain and Italy say raising the ship is vital to fully understanding what happened.

A balloon-like device will be used to lift the Bayes mast, a project spokesman said.

The yacht's 72-metre mast was cut off on Tuesday using a remotely operated tool and is now on the seabed.
